c2004. By Gennifer Choldenko. Set in 1935, this colorful novel tells the story of Matthew "Moose" Flanagan, a 12-year-old boy who moves with his family to Alcatraz Island. Moose's father has taken a job as a prison guard on the island so Moose's sister Natalie, who has autism spectrum disorder (ASD), can eventually attend a progressive school for children with disabilities. Moose's mother also begins work as a piano teacher to earn extra money for the family, and Moose has to take care of Natalie despite his frustrations with her behavior. As Moose's bond with his sister grows stronger, he begins to fight for her well-being, both at home and in the community. The author, whose sister has a severe form of ASD, has written an absorbing story filled with realistic dialogue and engaging characters. For readers ages 12 and up. (Softcover; 225 pages.)
