c2005. By Karen Siff Exkorn. The author, whose son was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at age 2, wrote this comprehensive handbook for parents of newly diagnosed children who are looking for information about ASD, its diagnosis, treatment options, and practical strategies in one in-depth text. In these pages, the author answers over 100 key parent questions, ranging from behavior and medication issues to treatment choices and coping with everyday life. The book contains the latest medical information on ASD, and the author utilizes personal experience, other parents’ stories, statements from ASD experts, and research data to provide a complete overview of ASD in an accessible format. The book also contains several important appendices, including The Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT); diagnostic criteria for the five pervasive developmental disorders; a list of current treatments and interventions; national and international organizations for ASD; internet resources; and recommended books. According to the author’s research and personal experience, early intervention is critical. The author’s son improved greatly with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy in combination with other treatments, but it is the author’s view that many effective treatment options exist and must be personalized to meet a child’s specific needs. (Softcover; 416 pages.)
