Daggett, Ph.D. In the course of their research on families of children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the authors found a disconcerting trend of parents being very dissatisfied with the interactions they had with professionals, particularly around the time of their child’s diagnosis. In addition, these parents were often left confused and distrustful of other professionals they interacted with while seeking later treatment. The responses the authors received from parents who had satisfying, supportive interactions with practitioners involved in their child’s diagnosis, therapy, and education, tended to show much better attitudes about their child’s ASD as well. It is the authors’ hope that this book can help change the way more professionals communicate with parents, making the experience more effective and meaningful for all involved. Chapters include: talking about ASD; listening to parents; belief systems about ASD; conducting assessments; communicating assessment results to families; intervention and educational programming; and helping parents and professionals work together. In addition, Section III of the book focuses on what parenting a child with an ASD is like, the lifelong issues the family needs to prepare for, and the effect having a child with an ASD can have on the rest of the family, beyond just the mother.
