c2009 By Celeste Shally; illustrated by David Harrington. Written by the author of Since We’re Friends, The Bully Blockers teaches kids to stand up for one another and “block” bullying from happening. The main character is a 3rd grader named Caleb who has a classmate with autism named Mark. Mark is being bullied by a new kid in school. Like a lot of kids, Caleb’s first reaction to witnessing the bullying is to walk away and mind his own business. Later, Caleb ponders if everyone would call him a tattle tail, or if he would also be picked on, if he told the teacher about the bullying he witnessed. After seeing yet another instance of bullying, Caleb realizes that his conscience wants him to do the right thing and stop the bully from picking on Mark. So Caleb starts “The Bully Blockers” club with his friends and classmates. As a group formed around standing up to bullies, they take a chance and confront the bully while in the act. You’ll have to read the book to find out what happens next! Reading this book can help kids gain confidence in speaking out against all bullying, but especially against the bullying of children with learning disabilities like autism. For readers aged 7-10. (Softcover; 32 pages)
