c2008. Written by Elaine Marie Larson, illustrated by Vivian Strand. Meltdown is a monster children must learn to tame in this bright and colorful comic strip style children’s book. A monster called Meltdown is on every left-hand page, while children using chameleon-like strategies tame him on every right-hand page. This book does double duty as it teaches young readers the meaning of common idioms like “save the day,” “don’t have a cow,” and “hit the road,” which children on the autism spectrum find difficult to understand. At the back of the book are questions to help young readers dig deeper into what causes their own meltdowns and how to deflate them. There’s also a quick checklist of ways to be a “Chameleon Kid” including: take a walk, draw a picture and hum a favorite song. This book will make it easier, and more fun for children on the autism spectrum to learn to self-regulate their behavior. For readers aged 4-10 years old. (Hardcover; 43 pages.)
