c2010. By Catherine Faherty. By the well renowned author of Asperger’s – What does it mean to me? and Understanding Death and Illness and What They Teach About Life comes this new title that inspires both those on the spectrum and their families and teachers to have successful communication. This book is split up into two user friendly contracts for communication, the first is for neurotypical communication partners and the second is for young people on the autism spectrum. Each contract for communication includes five statements for each communication partner to agree to abide by, the author also explains why abiding by each of these five statements is important to having successful communication experiences for both partners. To create the best environment for successful communication the author encourages the use of Social Stories developed by Carol Gray, TEACCH structured teaching techniques, and Communication Forms.
Included is an extensive three-part appendix including “Helpful Hints for Creating Communication Forms”, “Sample Communication Forms”, and “Book Excerpts” from the author’s widely acclaimed book Understanding Death and Illness and What They Teach About Life. A free CD is also included, featuring a printable version of both contracts. (Softcover; 106 pages.)
