c2005. Revised edition. by Valerie Paradiž. On the surface, this book tells the story of one mother's journey with her son through the world of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, throughout her son Elijah's story, the author weaves in the stories of her own life, the life of a friend who discovers her ASD as an adult, and the lives of several historical figures that many believe now may have been on the spectrum. When Valerie and Elijah journey to attend Autreat, an annual retreat for people with ASD, they meet Jim Sinclair, co-founder of Autism Network International (ANI). Their story crystallizes into a powerful exploration of ASD culture, and the author wonders how her son and other people with ASD will carry out the legacy left for them by these famous historical figures, and how the world will accept them. Since the book's original publication in 2002, the author has become a vocal advocate for the autism culture movement. In 2003, she founded the ASPIE school for teenagers with high-functioning autism (HFA) and Asperger Syndrome (AS). This newly revised edition of the book contains an epilogue in which the author discusses her school, as well as her own realization and late-in-life diagnosis of AS. In addition, there is a short passage from Elijah, in which he discusses his feelings about being one of the first students at ASPIE. The book contains many interesting quotations and references that readers may find helpful. (Softcover; 235 pages.)
