Unlike other interventions and treatment methods that focus on the symptoms of ASD and the modification of specific behaviors, this model uses a dynamic, family-oriented approach that teaches children with ASD the fundamentals of relating, communicating, and thinking while taking into account each child's strengths and unique needs. According to the authors, this comprehensive program integrates emotional, social, intellectual, and educational goals for each child, and is based on the assumption that the abilities of relating, communicating, and thinking can be favorably influenced by working with a child's emotions. The book is divided into 5 sections: improving the prognosis of ASD, including myths, facts, early signs, and a new framework; families first-- how families can use the DIR/Floortime model to promote relating, communicating, and thinking; the Floortime strategy; assessment and intervention using the DIR/Floortime approach; and overcoming difficult symptoms, including problem behaviors, coping with feelings, and developing social skills.
