c2007. Written and illustrated by Diane Murrell, LMSW. Tobin, a colorful red train engine, was introduced to readers in the author's first picture book, Tobin Learns to Make Friends. In that story, Tobin discovers how to make and keep friends when he gradually learns several important social skill concepts, such as personal space, sharing, taking turns, and good manners. In this follow-up book, Tobin's train engine friends try to learn more about Tobin's differences when he engages in several behaviors that they don't understand. The story presents specific challenges that affect Tobin's behavior, such as: discomfort with eye contact; the literal interpretation of words; unusual sensitivity to sensory stimuli; and difficulty with change. The story also highlights Tobin's special talents, including an exceptional memory and an extraordinary aptitude for numbers. Filled with colorful illustrations, this book will help children learn the importance of individual differences, acceptance, and friendship. For children ages 4-8. (Library binding; 29 pages.)
