c2006. By Stephen C. Luce and Angela F. Smith. Written by board-certified behavior analysts, this guide teaches parents, educators, and caregivers how to provide support to children with challenging behavior using the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA). According to the authors, “problem behaviors” are those that limit a child’s potential to develop skills, live at home, or attend school without continued intensive support, and can include self-injurious, disruptive, and self-stimulatory behaviors. The authors discuss the importance of identifying a challenging behavior, determining the function of the behavior, and introducing an education-based process in which a child reduces problem behavior while increasing and developing functional skills. A five-step process to reduce problem behavior is included, and this process is designed to help children change behaviors and maintain those changes across environments. Filled with case examples and numerous exercises, this is a concise guide to the ABA approach to behavior management. Stephen C. Luce is also the co-editor of Behavioral Intervention for Young Children with Autism: A Manual for Parents and Professionals. (Booklet; 50 pages.)
This book is a title in the series PRO-ED Series On Autism Spectrum Disorders.
