c2007. By Teresa A. Cardon, M.A., CCC-SLP. In this book, the author of Let's Talk Emotions! helps parents foster communication in their children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Cardon explains how setting up opportunities to initiate and respond with the use of adequate time, physical cues, verbal prompts, and partial modeling can promote communication in a child with ASD. She also discusses how organizing the rooms of a home with a communication plan in mind can help parents add opportunities for verbal and nonverbal language throughout each day. These same ideas can then be transferred to community settings, such as a child's school classroom. The book provides strategies for incorporating language opportunities into everyday life using sensory, music, story time, and playtime activities, and Chapter 7 focuses solely on making and using visual supports to enhance communication opportunities. (Softcover; 81 pages.)
