c2009. by Valerie Paradiz. Self advocacy is a skill often learned through simply observing others and noticing how they advocate for themselves. For individuals on the autism spectrum, however, self advocacy, like social skills and nonverbal communication, is a skill that must be learned. The Integrated Self-Advocacy ISA Curriculum is devoted to educating people on the autism spectrum to advocate for themselves. It begins by defining advocacy and then moves on to explain how to be a self advocate. Also discussed are the autism community, the sensory scan, the history of autism, the social scan, focused interests, role models, autism in the media, IEPs, and ADA. This curriculum is designed for middle school and high school students, or it can also be used with young adults. It is constructed to fulfill planning requirements for an IEP or ISP, and after completion of the program the individual will be left with a Self Advocacy Portfolio for use in daily life.

Available are both the Teacher Edition and The Student Workbook. The Teacher Edition is a ready to use curriculum consisting of 11 lessons. Each lesson comes with learning objectives, materials needed, content, suggestions for using the content, and activities. Also included is a CD of worksheets needed for the Self Advocacy Portfolio. The Student Workbook contains all content and activities that the student will need to complete the curriculum. (Teacher Edition, Softcover; 159 pages.) (Student Workbook, Softcover; 121pages.)
