c2008. By Paula Kluth & Kelly Chandler-Olcott. This book is a great resource for teachers and parents. The basic premise is that literacy encompasses much more than just reading, and that all children with autism should be presumed capable of learning to be literate. The authors place strong emphasis on tailoring teaching approaches to each student’s needs, strengths, and interests. They also discuss designing a classroom environment that promotes literacy learning for all students, reassessing students who cannot show literacy in traditional ways, and including students with autism in a wide range of classroom literacy activities. The book includes input from the authors’ own experience as educators and from individuals with autism. (Softcover; 220 pages.)
