c2007. By John Elder Robison. After a brief glance at Robison’s life in his brother’s book, Running with Scissors, Robison decided to write his own account of what growing up was like for him. From the overall events in the life of Robison, one might think of him as a mechanical genius, business executive, and entrepreneur; however, much of his life was the exact opposite of any of the roles he came to play. From early childhood, Robison can thoroughly describe how he knew he was not like others. He was unable to look people in the eye, initiate and maintain conversation, and had unusual thought patterns that others often found odd and disturbing. He found comfort in the consistency and preciseness of machines. Throughout childhood and adolescence he remained socially awkward, was teased and ignored, failed out of school, and was plagued with self-doubt. When diagnosed at the age of forty with Asperger Syndrome (AS), he was finally able to look back on his life and find that although AS took certain aspects of “normal” away, it replaced them with other abilities. He grew up with an abusive, alcoholic father and a mother who suffered from mental illness, but his social oddities helped insulate himself from his parents and his situation. His adept hearing and mechanical ability led to jobs that allowed him to focus his intense creativity, and he was able to achieve a stable life. Robison has also added several chapters to the book for the sole purpose of exposing his “logical” style of thinking, from his inability to use names for people except ones he has created (his wife is Unit 2), to having to consciously remember to “make small talk” instead of talking about tractors and trains. Robison writes extensively about how much he has learned, how he has grown as a person, and how he now considers himself to be as “normal” as anyone else. (Softcover; 302 pages.)
