c2007. By Travis Thompson, Ph.D. This informative and highly readable resource offers a concise, interdisciplinary understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Written by a psychologist who has extensive experience in the field of developmental disorders, this autism primer provides a thorough foundation of essential information for professionals, students, caregivers, and parents. In chapter 1, the author discusses the complexities inherent in obtaining an accurate diagnosis, and he describes the differences between screening instruments and assessment tools that are used to diagnose autism. The author stresses the importance of helping a child with ASD by trying seeing the world through his/her eyes, and he believes it is critical for parents to immediately share an ASD diagnosis with family members, teachers, friends, and other individuals in the community in order to quickly build a support team. Chapter 2 provides a general overview of ASD, including the history of diagnosis, related conditions, and autism prevalence. Chapter 3 focuses on early intervention, including planning and implementation, early intervention approaches, and selecting an early intervention program. The author specifically discusses early intervention in the context of brain development, and he explains related concepts such as face processing/eye contact, executive function and compulsivity, and language processing. Chapter 4 addresses family participation, with an emphasis on parenting. Additional topics that are highlighted in this chapter include: coming to terms with an ASD diagnosis; understanding parental perceptions, concerns, and expectations; parental roles and coping strategies; identifying sources of support; and establishing positive relationships with health care providers. Chapter 5 describes in depth intensive early behavior therapy (IEBT), including home-based IEBT, center-based services, early intervention principles, and how to monitor progress. Chapter 6 explores in detail the transition from preschool and educational placement, and the author provides specific strategies for collaboration between parents and schools, promoting preschool readiness, preparing for the kindergarten transition, and utilizing adapted educational methods and thematic instruction. Chapter 7 examines how to reduce problem behaviors through positive behavior support (PBS), and social skills training and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) are also highlighted. Chapter 8 addresses the important topics of mental health, concurrent disorders, and psychotherapeutic medications. In chapter 9, the author describes other disabilities that are commonly associated with ASD, including fragile x syndrome, Tourette syndrome, and Down syndrome. Chapter 10, the final chapter of the book, is devoted to educating parents and practitioners about the harmful consequences of implementing ineffective treatments and interventions, many which are based on anecdotal information. The author provides practical guidelines to consider when evaluating the effectiveness of a treatment or intervention method, and he emphasizes that the promotion of unproven remedies can be a disservice to the child, to other parents, and to therapists and educators who are seeking less expensive and time-consuming alternatives.
