c2006. By Cynthia Lord. This fictional children's book is told from the perspective of Catherine, the older sister of David, a young boy with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Catherine is a responsible big sister, often asked to watch after David, and she makes lists of rules for him to help him understand the world. When a new girl, Kristi, moves in next door at the beginning of summer vacation, Catherine finds herself wishing for a "normal" friend. But she also accompanies her mother to David's occupational therapy (OT) appointments, where she meets Jason, a boy her own age in a wheelchair who uses a communication picture system to talk. A gifted artist, she offers to draw new cards for him, to fill in the gaps in his vocabulary that she can see he struggles for. Between therapy appointments, she tries to develop her friendship with Kristi, but in the end, she finds herself having to make choices between appearing to be "normal" for Kristi, and being supportive in public of her new friend Jason and her own brother. This is a moving story addressing sibling and family issues, as well as the power of friendship and kindness. For readers ages 9-12. (Softcover; 200 pages.)
