c2007. By Celeste Shally. Illustrated by David Harrington. This colorfully illustrated book is designed to show typically functioning children how to successfully maintain a friendship with a peer who has autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The two boys in this book have so much in common that they are natural friends; they both love swimming, tag, and playing basketball. The only problem is that sometimes Matt, who has ASD, needs a little help from his friend to be patient and accept changes in his routine. Luckily for Matt, he has a good friend who has come up with strategies for diffusing situations before they develop into full-blown problems. Every child with autism could benefit from a friend like the boy in this book. This story also begins with a simple definition of autism that children will understand. For children ages 3-8. (Softcover; 28 pages.)
