c2006. By Michelle A. Dunn, Ph.D. S.O.S. is a social skills intervention curriculum for use with disabled students and their non-disabled peers. Using trained staff, the program targets children with pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) who are verbal and are in grades 1 through 6. The curriculum is designed for presentation over two academic school years. The author includes a review of current social skills interventions and explains why some programs do not work because of issues with acquisition, generalization and maintenance of skills taught. The S.O.S. program is designed to use the processing strengths of each student to help compensate for processing weaknesses. According to the author, making expectations known, informing students what information to attend to, and role-playing exactly what they have been taught helps utilize the concrete, visual strengths of students with PDD. The program is built around knowledge of each participants social skills deficits to help design lessons that build on learning, implementing, and fluently using appropriate social skills. The curriculum also hopes to foster understanding of differences and tolerance among non-disabled peers. The four components of the S.O.S. program are pull-out lessons, lessons in the classroom, peer mentoring, and parent involvement. A list of additional materials needed, effective timelines, special considerations, and references are also given. The book contains 27 lessons for classroom and pull-out sessions with stated goals, instructions, handouts, and homework practice worksheets. Instructions and lessons for peer mentoring, as well as parent training information, are also provided. (Softcover; 237 pages.)
