c2007. edited by Michelle Garcia Winner. From the author of Thinking About You, Thinking About Me, Inside Out, and Social Thinking Across the Home and School Day comes this new book of collected resources to help students with Asperger Syndrome (AS) and other social cognitive deficits learn to connect the consequences of their actions with the effect their actions have on other people. This book presents the concept of Social Behavior Maps (SBMs) as a good tool to aid these students, providing them with lists of expected and unexpected behaviors for a variety of situations, along with the feelings these behaviors engender in others, how those others will react to the behaviors, and how the student will subsequently feel. The opening description of the book briefly explains the rationale behind SBMs and how to use them. The remainder of the book is a collection of useful SBMs that clinicians at Winner's center have put together over time that can be used directly with students, or as examples for teachers and parents to use to create their own. They cover such subjects as: appropriate behavior when riding in the car or on public transportation; when at school; when in the classroom; when preparing for homework or tests; when using electronic means of communication, such as cell phones, text messages, and chat rooms; when visiting a friend or entertaining a friend at home; when dealing with personal hygiene; and when dealing with family situations, including when at home all summer. This book may be used as a stand-alone resource, or in conjunction with any of Michelle Garcia Winner's other works. (Softcover; 108 pages.)
