c1999. By Patricia Howlin, Simon Baron-Cohen, and Julie Hadwin. This book addresses autism spectrum disorder (ASD) from a "theory of mind" perspective. According to the authors, children with ASD are unable to understand other people's mental states, which is critical for social understanding and communication. It is the authors' view that children with ASD can be successfully taught to interpret mental states, and this guide provides effective strategies for teaching mental state concepts. The strategies presented are divided into three core areas: teaching children about emotional understanding, including facial expressions; teaching children about informational states, including taking another person's perspective; and teaching children how to develop pretend play. The book is filled with pictorial material that can be adapted for home or classroom use, and it also contains useful record forms. (Softcover; 290 pages.)
