c2001. By Ray Levy, Ph.D. and Bill O'Hanlon, M.S., L.M.F.T.; with Tyler Norris Goode. In this book, the authors offer readers the most successful practices they have found for dealing with defiant children. They emphasize that what defiant children want most is control over their lives, but they do not necessarily understand how to set appropriate limits. The book is divided into five parts. Parts 1-4 explain what motivates defiant children to act as they do; dispel parenting myths; address finding the appropriate parenting distance; and show parents how to use positive reinforcements and grow a stronger relationship with their child. The authors also focus on helping parents understand that it's necessary to have specific behavior goals in mind, and that they need to get used to breaking their expectations down into smaller, easily defined steps. Part 5 comprises the entire second half of the book, and gives instructions and ideas for a variety of behavior modification strategies. These include doing something different to break the cycle; using consequences versus punishments; effective time outs; safe hold downs when a child refuses time out; guided compliance for younger children; “pulling in the reins,” or offering a series of increasingly limited choices; and “The Academy,” or practice sessions for learning appropriate behavior in a target situation. Children with high-functioning autism (HFA) or Asperger Syndrome (AS) fall into the authors’ category of “inflexible” children. The authors note that such children have found the Academy model to be particularly effective, with its emphasis on practice and breaking the appropriate behavior down into concrete steps. (Softcover; 242 pages.)
