c2006. By Stephen M. Shore, MA, and Linda G. Rastelli, MA. According to the publisher, and as noted in the book’s introduction, the For Dummies book series is designed to provide accessible, practical, and user-friendly information on a complex topic. This valuable guide was created for parents, caregivers, persons with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and other individuals who are seeking basic information on numerous issues pertaining to ASD, and it was co-written by Stephen Shore, a well-known author and speaker who was diagnosed with ASD as a young child. The book is arranged in five parts. Part one, “Understanding Autism,” gives a basic overview of the disorder, and it includes chapters that cover the following topics: diagnostic criteria; symptoms; the impact of ASD on the community; interventions and therapies; ASD subtypes; conditions that resemble ASD; receiving good medical care; early intervention programs; the rise of recent ASD diagnoses; the genetic link; biomedical theories; the vaccine controversy; diagnosis and assessment; and where Asperger Syndrome (AS) sits on the autism spectrum. Part two of the book, “Addressing Physical Needs,” explains the current options for medical care for persons on the autism spectrum, and it includes chapters that address the following issues: drug therapy and medications; maximizing safety during vaccinations; the relationship between ASD and the immune system; biochemistry and behavior; improving immunity and boosting biochemistry; getting the lead and mercury out; optimizing nutrition; and special diets. Part three, “Enhancing Learning and Social Skills,” discusses specific ASD interventions and programs, and chapters include: choosing an appropriate behavioral, developmental, or educational intervention; dealing with learning and sensory differences; finding a learning environment that fits a child’s needs; navigating the legal and education systems; and fostering healthy relationships, both inside and outside of the family. Part four of the book, “Living With Autism as an Adult,” tackles important issues surrounding ASD and adulthood, and the information presented was written for adults on the spectrum and for their caregivers. Topics addressed in these chapters include: how to live interdependently; pursuing higher education; self-advocacy and disclosure; finding and keeping employment; community involvement; fostering friendships and romantic relationships; sex education; and special-needs planning for the future. Part five, “The Part of Tens,” offers two helpful top-ten lists, including ten tactful responses to challenging questions or comments, and ten things to do after a diagnosis. The book includes an appendix that provides a list of additional resources, and it also contains a removable “cheat sheet” which provides concise information in key areas pertaining to ASD. (Softcover; 365 pages.)
