c2007. By Mary Lynch Barbera with Tracy Rasmussen. The Verbal Behavior (VB) approach is a form of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) based on the works of Ivar Lovaas. VB was created out of the ABA approach and the works of B.F. Skinner involving verbal behavior. Barbera, author and parent to Lucas, diagnosed with autism, is a registered nurse and became a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) in 2003. The book begins with a brief history surrounding VB and the similarities and differences the approach shares with ABA. Barbera provides full descriptions of how to teach the verbal operants that make up expressive language which include: manding, tacting, echoing, and intraverbal skills. She also describes the verbal operants that make up receptive language: receptive, imitation and visual performance. Assessment forms, references, and websites are provided as well as chapters focusing on the use of: transfer procedures, teaching toileting, and self-help skills. (Softcover; 199 pages.)
