C2008. By Laurie Leventhal-Belfer. For children on the autism spectrum or those with sensory issues, compliance with everyday rules can be a battle. "Why do I have to?" is a simple, practical tool to help children understand the whys of life. This book contains 24 scenarios addressing these everyday struggles and gives practical strategies and suggestions for both child and parent. The scenarios are grouped into three categories; rules that may be frustrating at home, rules that may be frustrating about friends, and rules that may be frustrating about school. Each rule begins with a statement and illustration from the child's point of view, followed by a question and answer addressing the logical reasons a child is expected to comply.
A few of the rules covered in this book include: why do I have to wear shoes and a jacket when I go outside, why do I have to share toys, why do I have to let other kids play the game the "wrong" way, why do I have to do things that get my hands dirty, and why do I have to be quiet when I am working at school. It ends with a guide for writing your own rules and answers specific to the child as well as a goal chart. (Softcover; 77 pages.)
