c2007. By Mary Schlieder, M.S. The author's approach to helping students with social challenges is to provide a plan for creating a welcoming, supportive school environment where school staff and students are encouraged to become role models, mentors, and friends to students who need extra help to ensure social success. This step-by-step guide contains instructions for forming a "Circle of Friends" or a group of peer mentors who interact and model appropriate behavior for the target student with special needs. Instructions are provided for notifying parents, choosing students to participate, and planning meetings. Scripts that teach the art of chatting, games, and book club ideas are also included, along with websites and sample forms that provide additional support. The author shows how school staff can incorporate a "Circle of Friends" into extracurricular activities, which can utilize the strengths of the student with special needs while involving him/her in a special interest. Teachers are also instructed how to form a "Learning Team," where teachers who come in contact with the special needs student will better understand the students needs and can encourage positive interaction. (Softcover; 132 pages.)
