c2008. Written by Michelle Garcia Winner & Pamela Crooke. Illustrated by Kelly Knopp. This children’s book is chocked full of colorful illustrations and helpful scenarios about becoming a social thinker. The social detective, who wears a yellow hat and coat, tells readers that “social smarts” means “understanding that others have thoughts about us and we have thoughts about them.” The social detective goes on to tell readers that the thoughts we have about each other are based on whether we engage in expected or unexpected behavior. How do we figure out what behaviors are expected and what behaviors are unexpected? You’ll have to read this book to find out!

After reading this book, children will surely want to put their social detective hats on and try out the social thinking techniques found in this book. Plus, 14 bold social thinking phrased are used throughout the book and are defined at the back of the book for both the child and their parent to refer back to easily. The authors have also included three social thinking lessons at the back of the book for parents and children to do together. This book can also be incorporated into the author, Michelle Garcia Winner’s larger “Think Social!” curriculum. For readers age 5 and up. (Softcover; 61 pages)
