Winner of the 2008 ASA Outstanding Literary Work of the Year Award, Education Division.
©2007. By Ruth Aspy, Ph.D., and Barry G. Grossman, Ph.D. The authors, both licensed psychologists specializing in assessment and intervention, have created the Ziggurat Model, a five-level system designed to plan and structure comprehensive and personalized behavioral interventions for students with high-functioning autism (HFA) or Asperger Syndrome (AS). This model utilizes two primary assessment tools that the authors have developed. The first is the ABC-Iceberg assessment tool (ABC-I), which combines elements of the functional behavior assessment (FBA) with the iceberg analogy, a concept that emphasizes the importance of identifying the underlying strengths and needs related to autism. The second tool is the Underlying Characteristics Checklist (UCC), an informal assessment tool which identifies the following baseline characteristics in individuals with HFA and AS: social skills; restricted patterns and interests; communication; sensory differences; cognitive differences; motor differences; emotional vulnerability; and known medical or biological factors. UCC results can be used in the development of a comprehensive intervention plan that addresses each of the five hierarchical levels of the Ziggurat Model: sensory differences and biological needs; reinforcement; structure and visual supports (including Structured Teaching); task demands; and skills to teach. The Ziggurat Worksheet (ZW) is the final component of the model and ensures that critical elements, both individualized and global, are considered and that all areas in need of intervention are addressed. The book begins with a thorough review of the history of autism including theoretical perspectives, assessment, and overviews of FBA and the basic iceberg analogy. The remainder of the book focuses on intervention design that targets the five levels of the Ziggurat Model. Examples, case studies, and multiple interventions are included with an emphasis on structured teaching and visual supports. The ABC-I form and ZW form are included for reproduction. An example copy of the UCC form is also included, but is not reproducible. Packets of 20 blank UCC forms, along with an instruction manual, may be purchased separately (item BZIG02, BZIG04, and BZIG05). (Softcover; 331 pages.)
