Get to know the ASNC Bookstore
The Autism Society of North Carolina Bookstore offers nearly 600 titles, games and assessment resources from all of the major autism publishers, making it your one-stop place to shop. You can be assured that all the resources are top quality, because they are handpicked by our staff in conjunction with the Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC) clinical training department and our Autism Resource Specialists. You’ll also find that we check frequently to be sure that our extensive inventory is priced competitively compared to major online retailers; we’d like to earn your business.
When you shop with the ASNC Bookstore, you can feel good about your purchase. All proceeds are returned to ASNC, where they help fund our mission to improve the lives of individuals with autism and their families by providing support and promoting opportunities. The bookstore itself employs several adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
The ASNC Bookstore was created in 1987, when families had difficulty finding books about autism at their local bookstores and other retailers. The ASNC Communications Director at the time believed it was critical that families have access to information and resources that could help their children. He contacted publishers and started the bookstore with a single 3-foot bookcase.
Over the years, we grew and became the preferred bookstore at the Autism Society of America national conference, TEACCH conferences, and selected autism events around the country. We also worked with other autism organizations to sell resources and generate needed funds for their communities.
In the late 1990s, we hired a full-time bookstore manager, enabling us to provide a level of knowledge and customer service that no other online entity could offer. We also hired adults with autism to package and ship the orders, reflecting the mission of ASNC.
Meet our staff
Alex, our Bookstore Technical Assistant, has a degree in Computer Programming and is the “secret sauce” that ensures our online store is humming along and your order is processed. He taught himself to speak Japanese because he wanted to watch Japanese anime in the original language – not translated into English. He enjoys Aikido (a Japanese martial art) and lives with a corgi named Einstein. Diagnosed with high functioning autism in his teens, Alex first got involved with ASNC as a volunteer and now, lucky for us, is an employee.
Most likely the package you receive was carefully packed by Joanna. She packages and ships our orders, shelves books, and generally keeps things orderly for us. Among her many skills, we depend on Joanna to update the map that hangs in the Bookstore with all the worldwide locations we ship to. Joanna is a participant in our supported employment program, and it’s always a great day when she is working in the Bookstore. You can read more about Joanna in this ASNC blog.
