This guide was written for professionals and parents who work with verbal children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in kindergarten through third grade. Using the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), the authors offer comprehensive strategies for common classroom and home situations. Section one focuses on the school environment and covers topics such as: creating target behavior checklists; choosing the right setting; improving attention; developing independence; reading comprehension strategies; and managing negative behaviors. Section two of the book emphasizes providing consistency between school and home, and it also addresses the following issues: teaching play skills; sleep difficulties; eating challenges; dealing with frustration; and negative behaviors and discipline. It is the authors' view that breaking down tasks into manageable steps, along with the appropriate supports, helps children with ASD master skills in a consistent, predictable, and reinforcing environment. The authors provide specific examples for instructing students, and they describe strategies for fading supports and generalizing skills to a variety of settings.
