By Christy Gast and Jane Krug ©2008. The authors of Caring for Myself: A Social Skills Storybook have created this valuable resource for parents or caregivers faced with the task of teaching hygiene and self-care skills to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The tasks covered in this book are:
Each task begins by answering the questions: who, what, where, when, how, and why, to give children a quick overview of what that particular task entails. Several pages are devoted to each task, breaking it down into simple, manageable steps, and providing photographs along the way of a child completing each of these steps. Finally, each task ends with a list of considerations for assuring a successful outcome for your own child. For example, for a child with ASD, bringing a comfort item such as a book or toy to the salon when they get their haircut may make the experience less stressful on that child.
Large bold text and colorful photographs of children happily completing each task will make this book visually appealing to children.
The authors suggest that you customize your copy of this book by taking photographs of your own child completing each task, and taping them over the existing photos, as well as adding/deleting text as deemed necessary. For ages 4-8. (Hardcover; 96 pages.)
