This book's premise is that students with high functioning autism typically have deficits in perspective taking and interpreting others' emotions and these deficits lead to deficits in reading comprehension. To promote gains in both social and reading comprehension the author has devised lesson plans that work on both simultaneously. This book's lesson plans are also built on the foundation of instructional methods found in research-based interventions like TEACCH. These methods include, predictable expectations for group discussion, use of visual strategies and consistent routines. Each lesson includes Goals, Teacher Directions, Tasks, Discussion Topics and Handouts. This straightforward book is useful for both teachers and therapists in a variety of settings and grade levels. A CD is also enclosed with all of the reproducible handouts. (Softcover; 157 pages)
